Alaa, Medical Student, Al-Azhar U.

— Alaa

As a medical student in Gaza, continuing our education over the past two years has been
an act of determination and hope. Our classrooms have turned into shelters, and our
hospitals—where we learn and train—have become targets. Many of our professors and
colleagues have been killed, and our campuses lie in ruins. Yet, we have not stopped
studying. Even with the loss of our labs, internet blackouts, and constant displacement,
we tried to attend online lectures, review our notes by candlelight, and study in tents or
temporary shelters. Some of us took exams after nights without sleep, others while
mourning family members. Still, we refused to let go of our dream of becoming doctors
and serving our people. Medical education in Gaza today is more than a path to a
degree—it is a form of resistance, a statement that we will not let war erase our minds or
our future.
